Global Money Week 2024 starts today: “Protect your money, secure your future”

Skopje, 18 March 2024

The National Bank, the Ministry of Finance, the Securities Exchange Commission, the Agency for Supervision of Fully Funded Pension Insurance and the Insurance Supervision Agency, in cooperation with private and civil sector associations and institutions that are actively engaged in the field of financial education, as of today until 24 March, for the twelfth year in a row, mark Global Money Week. Global Money Week is traditionally celebrated through lectures and the publication of educational materials in the field of finance.

The theme of this year’s Global Money Week is: “Protect your money, secure your future”, which refers to the safe management of money and raising awareness of potential risks in the financial sector and the protection of personal finances. Such risks include financial fraud, as well as phishing, online shopping fraud, and data privacy risks such as identity theft. Most often, young people are those who are victims of financial fraud, due to their constant contact with technologies and lower awareness of the possible dangers when using modern technology and modern payment methods to provide new financial products and services. Hence, the theme of this year’s Global Money Week encourages young people to be forward-looking and cautious when making financial decisions and using modern technologies.

The Agency for Supervision of Fully Funded Pension Insurance – MAPAS, together with the pension companies, this year is conducting a number of activities and within these it announced an Art Competition intended for all children, citizens of the Republic of North Macedonia, between the ages of 4 and 14 as an educational activity marking the “GLOBAL MONEY WEEK 2024”.

In addition, there will be extra educational lectures held for students in primary and secondary schools, as well as for university students, for whom a large event is additionally organized together with the University Student Assembly and will be held on 25.03.2024. This event will include students from the Faculty of Economics who will transfer their personal experience gained through their practical work in MAPAS and pension companies with the aim of raising awareness among their colleagues about the benefits of understanding the financial market and financial institutions.

Internationally, the Global Money Week has been celebrated since 2012, organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), with a sole interruption in 2020 due to the pandemic. This global initiative, which has so far been celebrated in more than 176 countries worldwide and has reached 60 million children and youth, raises awareness among young people about financial education and their knowledge in money, savings, employment and entrepreneurship.
